Rolex Serial Numbers & Production Dates

Rolex Serial Number Lookup Tool

Every Rolex watch carries a unique serial number that records when it left the factory. Running a Rolex serial number check is one of the most reliable steps when buying, selling, or researching a watch’s history.

Use the lookup tool below to estimate the production year of your Rolex, or scroll down for a complete serial number chart and a guide to understanding what these numbers actually tell you.

How To Use The Tool

There are two ways to use this page. Enter your serial number into the search bar above for an instant result, or use the reference tables below to find your serial range manually. Both approaches cover the full span of Rolex serial number charts from the 1920s onwards.

For watches produced after 2011, the tool will indicate post-2011 production rather than a specific year, given that Rolex introduced a randomised serial system at that point. For everything produced before that, both the letter-prefix era and the numeric era are covered in full.

Enter your serial number into the search bar above, or use the tables below to match it to an estimated production year.

What is a Rolex Serial Number Used For?

A Rolex serial number is a unique identifier assigned to every watch during manufacture. It is separate from the Rolex model number, also called a reference number, which identifies the design and specifications of a particular model rather than the individual piece. The serial number is what links a specific watch to its approximate year of production.

Rolex has used three different serial number systems over the years:

  • Pure numeric (pre-1987): A sequential number with no letter prefix. The higher the number, the later the watch was produced.
  • Letter prefix (1987 to 2010): A single letter followed by a numeric sequence, with each letter corresponding to a specific production year or short window.
  • Randomised alphanumeric (post-2011): Modern Rolex watches carry a randomised serial number, meaning they cannot be dated precisely by serial alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a Rolex serial number check to verify a watch is genuine?

A serial number check is a valuable first step, but it cannot confirm a genuine Rolex on its own. You should cross-reference the serial with the model number, dial configuration, and case details. Inconsistencies among these are worth investigating further. For a thorough assessment, it’s always best to consult a specialist.

Does the production year affect the value of a Rolex?

The year of manufacture can significantly impact the value of a Rolex watch. Early examples of iconic references, transitional dial variants, and watches from specific production windows are often more sought-after by collectors. If you’d like to value your Rolex watch, our team offers free, no-obligation valuations.

Can I find the serial number on the Rolex papers?

Yes. If the watch comes with original documentation, the serial number on the papers should match the one engraved on the watch. This is one of the first things to check when buying a pre-owned Rolex, as a mismatch between the serial number on the papers and the serial and model engraved on the case is a significant red flag.
