Rolex was founded in London in 1905 by Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis, initially as a distributor of Swiss movements. The Rolex name was adopted in 1908, and the company relocated to Geneva in 1919, where it has remained ever since.
The brand’s early reputation was built on precision. In 1910, a Rolex movement became the first wristwatch to receive the Swiss Certificate of Chronometric Precision, and in 1914, the Kew Observatory in England awarded one of its watches the highest timing certification ever given to a wristwatch at the time.
The modern Rolex story accelerated in 1926 with the introduction of the Oyster, the world’s first waterproof wristwatch, featuring a screw-down crown and case back that sealed the movement from dust and moisture. The following year, British swimmer Mercedes Gleitze wore one across the English Channel, giving Rolex a public demonstration of the Oyster’s capabilities that no advertisement could have matched. In 1931, the brand patented the Perpetual rotor, the self-winding mechanism that underpins virtually every automatic watch made today.
The decades that followed saw Rolex develop watches built for specific professional purposes. The Submariner launched in 1953 as a dedicated diving watch, the same year Tenzing Norgay’s Everest expedition carried an Explorer prototype to the summit. The GMT-Master arrived in 1955 for Pan Am’s transatlantic pilots, and the Cosmograph Daytona followed in 1963 for motorsport timing. These professional models remain some of the most recognisable and sought-after references on the pre-owned market today.
Alongside the Professional collection, Rolex produces the Dress and Classic collections, including the Day-Date, Datejust, and the 1908, which prioritise refinement and craftsmanship over technical specification.
Every watch is inspected in-house by our team before it goes on sale. We assess authenticity, condition, and the consistency of reference numbers, case, bracelet, and dial. Watches are not listed until they meet our standards.
Whether the watch comes with the box and papers is listed clearly on every product page. Many of the watches in our collection are sold with their original box, papers, and accessories. Where these are not present, this is noted on the listing and reflected in the price.
All watches sold by Chronofinder come with a minimum 12-month mechanical warranty. For specific warranty terms and duration, please refer to our warranty page or contact our team directly.
